Regulation of Odor around the World

Olfactory pollution is the subject of new regulations in many nations, with the goal being to provide clear regulatory definitions and reference levels in support of effective decision-making by public jurisdictions and local bodies, whether these be residential or industrial.

A brief list of recent legislative and standardization developments relative to odor from a few sources taken from around the world is enough to demonstrate the general trend:

  • In 2003, Europe published Standard EN 13725 pertaining to odor measurement using dynamic dilution olfactometry;
  • In 2004, the United States revised Standard ASTM E679 regarding odor measurement;
  • Germany, Australia, Brazil, the United States, France, New Zealand, the Netherlands and many other countries now have legislation based on the criteria of odor-units per cubic meter of air (o.u./m³) supported by detailed official instructions for sampling, characterization and odor measurement
